For the first time, the annual postgraduate workshop of the Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry (SHAC) will take place outside the United Kingdom, at the University of Amsterdam. The workshop offers postgraduate students and early-career researchers the opportunity to share ideas, explore methodological issues and network in a stimulating atmosphere.

The new articles deal with nine newly discovered letters by Michael Maier (1568-1622), George Fordyce’s additios and modifications to William Cullen’s philosophical chemistry and the growing role of titrimetry in late nineteenth-century industry.

The Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry invites applications for its award scheme for 2013. Two types of award are available: support for research into the history of chemistry or history of alchemy by New Scholars and support for Subject Development of either history of chemistry or history of alchemy.

Welcome to the Website of the Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry (SHAC), publisher of the scholarly journal Ambix.
Founded in 1935, SHAC has consistently maintained the highest standards of scholarship in all aspects of the history of alchemy and chemistry from early times to the present. The Society has a wide international membership from over thirty countries.
We hold meetings and webinars, offer scholarly prizes and grants, and publish the journal Ambix. The Society’s newsletter, Chemical Intelligence, is published twice a year. We have also established the Graduate Network to bring together postgraduate students in the field.
